I started with in a gi because I got similar advice to this. After switching to no gi a couple years later; although some translated without the grips of lapels and sleeves I was fucking lost. I say it's best to do what you like more. Most of us don't want to be world champions. No gi is the future of the sport anyways.

Every instructor is only going to tell you this nonsense about Gi training because they want to sell you Gi's and instructional for the Gi. Don't buy it. It is useful to train in it because in a street fight you can use their clothes against them for grips

  • @TheTMschannel

Wait what?! You absolutely should not be breathing through your nose! It will severely limit your ability to breathe during hard training. Of course have good oral hygiene and don't down a shitload of coffee before training. If you can get enough air just breathing through your nose, then you're not training hard. Seriously some of this BJJ "etiquette" is really becoming just oversensitive bollocks. If I can have your nuts in my face during north south, then I can suffer through you breathing on me Bjj etiquette basically boils down to 2 things: Roll at a pace where both parties enjoy it and agree to it Roll in a safe manner to minimize likelyhood of injury All the shit beside that (smothering, digging elbows into thighs, being heavy on the knee on belly, forearms in the throat etc.) that people complain about.... Sorry, bit it's a combat sport. If you expected it to be comfortable, then you need to read a dictionary. Learn to find fun in the discomfort

Good advice! I'm in my 4th month. 4 classes a week, and in the beginning I was definitely that. I still do when we're learning something new, but it took a good blue belt teammates to just tell me "DO IT" when I was slowly tightening a rear naked. Getting that feeling was good for me.

I did no gi for three years before putting a gi on. I find it to be the total opposite. Doing no gi forced me to learn how to hand fight and control positions properly because it is easier for your opponent to escape, whereas a lot of beginners that start in the gi just mindlessly death grip onto collars and sleeves, but don't do anything with it. You should train for specificity. Collar and sleeve, lasso and spider are basically irrelevant no gi whereas inside heel hooks aren't that relevant in the gi. You don't see wrestlers train in a kimono to be more technical because it would make no sense. Also, everyone has always trained in the gi out of tradition, so of course world champions will have worn the gi, but that's becoming less true over time as no gi becomes more popular and more no gi specific schools open. It's like if ten guys in a red t-shirt raced and the winner was someone wearing a red t-shirt. I am enjoying learning the gi, but the idea that the gi somehow makes you magically better no gi than just training more no gi makes no sense.
